I've got this damn factory job back east. I sit at a desk and assemble medical machines. After being laid off for almost a year, I shouldn't complain, but day in and out,as I sit at my bench working, all I think about is driving "home" to Cooke City. I've got this senario in my head where I work at the Beartooth Cafe, bake pies and make quilts, serve the tourists my famous beef stew lunch before they drive down into Yellowstone. My cat and dog snooze on the front porch, and in the evening I forage for boysenberries for tomorrows pies. I can hear the ravens, smell the lodgepole forest behind the cafe...I want to be there so badly that I've made up this alter-reality. Thank God for Cooke City. It's quite a bit like heaven.

Love Pat's alter-reality. I have never lived there but sounds like a great alter-reality to live. I grow on an island outside of Chareslton SC which are two different worlds but Cooke City may get a new residence in a few year when I retire.

I totally enjoyed your website because they brought back some great memories. We used to own and operate the Anvil Inn on the East end of town where they used to stop plowing and put up barricades. Except for the Watuck Lodge (used to be the Best Western Motel) we had the busiest lodge and restuarant in town. We used to have live music on Wed. and Sat. nights. Jeff Minuet (I hope I spelled his name right) had a country band that packed the people in, I remember one Sat. night we sold 43 large pizzas.(specialty of the house was Sausage and Sauerkraut) That was in 1974. Bill and Betty Summers was there and Larry McKee was our Deputy Sheriff. In the winter of '73-'74 we were snowmobiling over the roof of the lodge. We are retired now and living in Arizona. (too hot) You folks present a very nice website and pictures. Thank you, Sam Lemert.

Hello Steve and Lisa

We enjoy your web site alot. We especially enjoy the daily pics of travelers visiting Cooke City. They all seem so happy to be there. And why not, it's great! I first visited Cooke City in the summer of 1965 while working for the National Park Service as a surveyor in Yellowstone. And revisited again in February 1972. My daughter Robin and I are about to embark on a road trip that will take us to Cooke City on September 18th or 19th. We plan to stop in and see you. Maybe get on your website. It's a long way from New Jersey, but well worth the trip. Keep up the good work.

I love this little town and as a matter of fact we had some snow ferries that day. I am coming back one day soon and will stop by to say hi to the both of you and hope to get my picture on the web site.

Thank you for the website.

I bookmarked your page! It's great! I love the daily pics and webcam! I came to Cooke City in early Feb. 2005 for my third sled ride ever. (First over the age of ten.). I borrowed my buddy's RMK 800 and found a boulder. 500 bucks later I'm addicted to sledding. So much so, I went and bought an RMK 700 and $600 bucks worth of gear. I'll be there March 1st for round two!!! And I'll be coming back next year and the year after that, and the year after that....you get the picture. Oh, incidentally, I bought fuel at your place last time. I'll be sure to give you my business again. Thanks!!!

I'm down here on Galveston Island in Texas just surfing the web. I'm preparing for a trip to Grand Teton and Yellowstone the end of May. I hope the Beartooth Byway is open when I'm there. I remember passing through Cooke City on my way out of Yellowstone several years ago. Stopped in the general store and ate at a little eatery there. What a fun town! I was sorry to hear about the avalanche that killed some people last month. Y'all be careful up there, and maybe this Texas chick will see you soon! :)

Glad to see the pictures of the Harleys in Town. I was the guy giving Lisa the ride. We all appriciated your friendlyness and hospitality. We made it over the pass at 28 degrees with drifts 30 feet high. The mountains always look better from a motorcycle. We have shared our story of your business with several and will be back to see you again. Larry & Friends from South Dakota

I want to say "Thanks". I love seeing the daily photos of Cooke City.

My husband and I have been to Cooke City only twice in the last twelve years but it has a warm spot in our hearts. The first time we pulled into town was in 1990 on our Harleys, we'd just crossed Beartooth, we were cold and wet. The Cooke City sign was a welcomed sight and our stay there was the best part of our three week trip. We were back again in 1999 and the feeling was the same.

THANKS again for taking your time to put this website out there for us to enjoy.

We'll be back, Dave and Debra Brooks Palmetto, Georgia 6/5/2002

Hi from Czech Republic. This daily pictures are great and whole Yellowstone is very nice place. My girlfriend is working at Cooke City at The Bistro Restaurant for whole summer. Her name is Zuzana. She told me that people in your city are very kind, sweet and friendly. Thanx for that. If you see her, say her hello from me. If some place on your daily pictures remains, in corner perhaps, you can make a foto of her :). Be kind to her. Jirik.

Steve and Lisa,

You got me hooked on your daily pictures. Why an avid Cooke City snowmobiler would be checking summer pictures every so often baffles me, but I do it.

You're really using the Internet the way it creates value for everyone. Great job. I hope you can find the business value to keep it going. I think eventually you can charge a few dollars to post pictures, or even an annual subscription to your site.

What are the favorite things to do in the summer? Can you take a day trip up on the same trails and capture a few photos about what that is like? Maybe I'll plan a summer outing there. Rent a 4x4 and explore?

I have been watching your web site and looking at the photo's again every day for the last two weeks. Looks like the snow is coming back. I have been coming to Cooke City for the past two years and riding sleds in the deep snow. It is something that I will never forget. Rolling a sled down the mountain is something that you can't do in Minnesota. I was not hurt, but the sled, well....I was able to drive it back.

I will not be coming back this year because my brother just had his first baby. Will be looking forward to coming back as soon as possible.

Thanks for all the pictures.

My wife and I visit your site just about every day, thank you very much for the updated pictures every day. I first came to Cooke about 20 years ago when my Dad was an original founding member/drummer of the world famous "Beef Lips" band. The Elkhorn Saloon, Ma Perkins Cafe(where I worked for a summer), the Norquist cabins (where I lived for a summer), the little A-framed Drive-in at the end of town, there all gone now but hold a special place with me. We have been back in the last several years 3 times, with the last being in August 02, where we camped out at Jeff Menueys' place-the BBQ cut. trout were unbelievable, and the music around the campfire was even better! Thanks again for keeping the new memories alive everyday.

So nice to find this site. Worked for the NPS for 3 seasons ('67-'69) on the Beartooth Highway road maintenance crew. Many fond memories of Cooke City and Silver Gate. Used to pick up my mail from George & Ann Hermans's post office, and go across the street to the Range Riders to read. Many Saturday nights at the Watuck, also. It's the most beautiful country anywhere.

Dear Steve,

I met you very briefly back in August. We have enjoyed looking at your web site on a daily basis. I first saw Silver Gate and Cooke City in about 1938 as a young kid, and on a trip with my folks. This was not too long after the Beartooth Highway was dedicated, after being built in the middle 30's. I used to own the cabin where Dan Hartman, the photographer, now resides with his family. We enjoy your web site, and keep up the good work.

We look forward to seeing you next summer, and will be sure to visit a bit longer.

Thank You,

I TALKED TO YOU ABOUT A WEEK AND A HALF AGO ABOUT THE SNOW CONDITIONS AT COOKE CITY AND YOU WANTED TO KNOW HOW THE RIDING WAS IN TOGWOTEE IF WE WENT THERE. WE WERE OUT THERE LAST WEEK AND IT WAS VERY GOOD. WE HAVE SEEN MORE SNOW OUT THERE IN PAST YEARS BUT IF YOU KNEW WHERE TO GO YOU HAD NO PROBLEM FINDING UNTRACKED POWDER, AND MORE THAN ENOUGH SNOW TO GET STUCK IN. THEY GOT FRESH SNOW EVERYDAY THAT WE WERE THERE. NEXT YEAR WE WILL BE BACK IN COOKE CITY FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT, BECAUSE THE RIDING IS ALWAYS GOOD IN COOKE CITY.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK WITH THE WEB SITE AND THE SNOW REPORT.

Howdy from hot and humid Texas! We enjoy checking your Daily Picture to see how nice it is up there in wonderful Cooke City. We were there last in July 2001; doubt we'll make it this year, but we'll sure visit vicariously every chance we get.

Thanks for the pictures and keeping us all informed!

GR and Kelly, and all the Wyoming Road Trip 2001 gang!

I just wanted to send a note to say how much fun we had in Cooke City. Steve and Lisa were great and the cabin was just what we wanted to stay in. I hope that we can come back next year and do it all over again Thanks alot Ron, Jim, Lee.

I just got back from my stay at the Big Moose Resort. Bev & Todd are wonderful hosts and have a great location just east of town. I miss it terribly and am already looking forward to my next visit there. The Absorka/Beartooth wilderness is just as beautiful as Yellowstone itself and Cooke City is the perfect place to enjoy both. It is so quaint and I hope it never changes!!

Thanks to all (especially Bev & Todd) for the perfect trip!!!

Seeing Cooke City and the mountains off to the west help make the long days here at work pass by. Have always enjoyed our visits to Cooke City and wish I was there now. The daily pictures will have to provide my mountain "fix" for now, but there's just no substitute for the real thing. Bye for now from T.Howland in Mankato, MN.

I'm glad to see snow on the ground again in Cooke City. We were there last year during the first week of March. This year we'll be coming out the last week of January. I'm impressed with your discipline to get out and take a picture everyday. I was also very impressed with how friendly you two were. Our group will be buying all our gas from you again this year...as well as all those little things we forget to pack.

This site is the best with all the live web cam shots, definetly on my favorites list and have shared it with friends. I passed through Cooke City a couple years ago and happened to see a moose in town. My wife and her twin sister thought it would be great to get a "close-up" of the moose by actually getting closer. The moose turned and came at them and they ran to the car and jumped in while i had tears in my eyes from laughing so hard. They learned their lesson and we will never forget that experience in Cooke City or the very friendly people we met while we were there for a few hours. Looking down from cyberspace and hope to return one day. Texas Joe....

Hey there Steve and Lisa,

You requested a snow report from the top of the world...here it i:

As of 1/30/03 the snow is good, very good for this time of year. Rocks are still the number one bad guy and another 12" would be just great but it's definitely rideable. There's about 18" of new powder right now..... yum!

All embarrassment aside, Ben call mom. You're never to old to call your mother. Remember that boys! All Ben thinks about the minute he sees the first snow flake is Cook City. After all I gave him his first snowmobile ride and bought him his first snowsuit and cosigned for his first snowmobile and kept up his insurance and made excuses to his girlfriend! If Ben is ever missing, that means he's found a way to make a living in Cook City.

Love, MOM

Like the rest who have posted, I love your site! My mother was born close to Cody WYO. and moved to Tennessee right after WW2. I bounced into the world in 1948 and grew up in TN, but summered in WYO. I remember Cook City in the late 50s and what a great place it was for a 10 year old to terrorize!

The last time I made it out to WYO was in 88, took my TN wife to see the great place and show her Yellowstone. Kinda hard to do cause it was on FIRE at the time, but we mannaged. Didn't make it over to Cook City, fact was we were stuck in Jackson Hole for days before they would open that enterance due to the fire.

I will be back out there before I croke and I sure will spend quality time in Cook. Oh, I am now a 56 year old "folk" singer and my list of songs has a nice section of dirty/funny ones. Cook sound like it still has a major heart when the snow falls and to me that would be the time to show up and both pick a little bit and take take it all in.

Thanks again for the site, if you wanta check out mine it is walkerandandy.com
